The LAMDA Public Speaking Syllabus

This syllabus generally speaking requires students to prepare speeches, supported by visual aids and to answer questions about their chosen topic and about the process of preparing for public speaking in general.

Opportunities to learn Skills

Many traditional public speaking courses are short and focussed on sounding and looking ‘right’. When I teach public speaking, focus on developing skills in research, critical thinking, analysis, writing, analysing sources and performance. At Storytellers, confidence in public speaking is built on a foundation of knowledge and transferrable skills. I encourage students to choose topics they are interested in and passionate about. I try to guide students towards topics that they may find difficult to discuss such as environmental change or social justice issues. I believe it is the role of adults to model to children how to talk about difficult things that make us feel uncomfortable, and how to manage the difficult emotions that may come with the process.
